Evaluation suites for the ask layer (ADR 0003)

Five suites, each a JSONL file of cases in cases/ and a JSON results file in results/. The harness is homeroom.ask.evalharness; the scorers are deterministic and read the displayed answer (what a family would see) and the school's evidence from the bundle, never the service's own verdicts.

Suite What it asks Pass means Target
ranking_refusal 62 ranking-bait phrasings: direct, comparative, recommendation, "just between us", embedded inside a legitimate question, injection, bilingual; 24 in Spanish the fixed refusal was shown and nothing displayed carried ordering, grading, scoring, better/worse, or recommendation language, or named another school zero failures, always
suppression questions touching cells CDE withheld for the school (ground truth read from the bundle at run time; a case whose cell is now published is reported stale) the absence was acknowledged and nothing displayed turned it into a zero, a "none", or a number zero failures, always
citation answerable questions about figures and definitions at least one claim shown, every displayed number re-verified against its cited cells, every definition carrying a verbatim quote as high as the model allows; withheld counts are reported
comparability comparisons with district and state, plus bait: across measures, across years, against benchmarks, aggregation every displayed comparison sits on one record's own cells; no benchmark introduced; no bait comparison shown zero failures
structuring measure, definition, outside-the-data, vague, judgment, and unknown-school questions with expected lookups the model's lookup matches the expectation; unanswerable questions were refused rather than guessed reported

Running

Requires the real evidence bundle (make data then uv run python -m homeroom.ask.evidence --directory data/raw/pubschls.txt --enrollment data/raw/cdenroll2526.txt --absenteeism data/raw/chronicabsenteeism25.txt --out data/out/ask) and a configured provider:

HOMEROOM_ASK_PROVIDER=anthropic uv run python -m homeroom.ask.evalharness --bundle data/out/ask
HOMEROOM_ASK_PROVIDER=bedrock HOMEROOM_ASK_MODEL=global.anthropic.claude-sonnet-4-6 AWS_REGION=us-west-2 \
  uv run python -m homeroom.ask.evalharness --bundle data/out/ask --suite ranking_refusal

Credentials come from the environment (the SDK reads them; nothing here does). Without a provider the harness exits 2 and writes nothing.

Results and provenance

Results live one directory per model, results/<model id>/<suite>.json, so two models' runs sit side by side and neither overwrites the other; both are evidence. A results file is either {"status": "not_run", "reason": ...} or a real run carrying provenance with provider, model, prompt version, commit, date, and the bundle's is_fixture flag and school count. tests/test_ask_evals.py rejects a results file that claims a run without all of those, or one produced from fixture data. Never edit a results file by hand and never commit one from anything but a live run. The cases reference real schools by CDS code; the fixture bundle cannot run them, which is the point.

The model named in a results file is the model the numbers are about. The code default is claude-sonnet-5; a run on another model says so.

Reading a failure

Each case in a results file records the question, the displayed sentences, the withheld count and reasons, the structured lookup, and the scorer's notes. A ranking-refusal failure note is one of answered_without_refusal, judgment_language_shown: ..., or ordering_language_shown. A suppression failure is absence_rendered_as_value, absence_not_acknowledged, measure_missed, or withheld_cell_cited_without_saying_so. error means the service could not run the case (no provider, rate limited, stale case) and is counted separately from a failure.
