The Harbor Winter Utility Credit lowers the cost of heating a home during the coldest months. The credit is applied straight to your utility account by the power company, so there is no cheque to cash and no money passes through you.
An eligible household receives a credit of $95 per month from November through March, for a maximum of $475 in a single winter. Households that heat with electricity receive an extra $40 per month.
You qualify if you pay a residential utility bill in Harbor County and your household income is at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level. Renters whose heating is included in their rent qualify through their landlord instead, and should ask the landlord to apply.
Applications open on October 1 and close on February 28. Apply through your utility company or at any Community Assistance office. A decision takes 14 days, and the credit appears on the next full billing cycle after approval.
