Recurring Splits Module - Implementation Summary

✅ Completion Status

All acceptance criteria have been met and implemented:

  • ✅ RecurringSplit entity created with all required fields
  • ✅ Cron job generates splits automatically (every 6 hours)
  • ✅ Pause/resume functionality with state management
  • ✅ Template editing for future splits

Database Migration

1674316800000-CreateRecurringSplitsTable.ts (100 lines)

  • Creates recurring_splits table
  • All columns with proper types and constraints
  • Foreign key to splits table with CASCADE delete
  • 5 strategic indexes for performance:
    • creator_id - fast creator lookups
    • template_split_id - template references
    • is_active - filter active splits
    • next_occurrence - scheduler queries
    • (is_active, next_occurrence) - composite for scheduler

Integration

Updated app.module.ts

  • Added RecurringSplitsModule to imports
  • Properly registered in module configuration

1. Automatic Split Generation

WebSocket Events

Three types of real-time notifications:

  1. Split Generated - When a new split is created from recurring template
  2. Reminder Notification - When due date approaches
  3. Recurring Split Expired - When end date is reached

Error Handling

Comprehensive error management:

BadRequestException

  • Invalid end dates (past)
  • Invalid frequency
  • Invalid reminder days

NotFoundException

  • Template split not found
  • Recurring split not found

ConflictException

  • Pause when already paused
  • Resume when already active

Installation & Setup

1. Install Dependencies

2. Run Migration

npm run typeorm migration:run
  • Creates recurring_splits table
  • Adds all indexes

3. Verify in Swagger

Performance Characteristics

Scheduler Efficiency

  • 6-hour interval for generation: Balances freshness with load
  • Batch processing: All due splits in single run
  • Indexed queries: Fast filtering by active/next_occurrence

Database Optimization

  • Composite index on (is_active, next_occurrence) for scheduler
  • Separate indexes for common queries
  • FK with CASCADE for data integrity

Memory Management

  • Stateless service design
  • No long-running operations in request handlers
  • Scheduled jobs are background processes
