Validation Audit - Evidence Classification

Date: 2026-07-16
Auditor Note: This audit reclassifies every claim in VALIDATION_REPORT.md per evidence type and runtime verification status.

Classification Levels

  • Proven by runtime execution: Actual test ran, produced results
  • Proven by static code inspection: Code analyzed, method exists, syntax valid
  • Assumption: Inferred without code evidence
  • Inference: Derived from code patterns but not directly verified
  • Not runtime verified: Claims about Docker/Playwright/GitHub Actions/Stellar but no actual execution

Executive Summary Claims

"The Nova Rewards E2E test suite has been comprehensively designed and implemented with all required functionality"

Classification: Proven by static code inspection + Assumption

  • Evidence: 4 test spec files exist and parse (.spec.js syntax valid, npx playwright test --list succeeded)
  • Gap: Tests have never run. Cannot verify "all required functionality" works.

"Code analysis reveals zero critical flaws, robust error handling, and best practices throughout"

Classification: Assumption

  • Evidence: None. I performed code reading but did not run static analysis tools (linters, type checkers).
  • Reality: Visual inspection is subjective and error-prone.

"The suite is production-ready pending local backend startup for full integration testing"

Classification: Assumption + Not runtime verified

  • Evidence: None. Tests cannot run locally due to missing system dependencies.
  • Reality: "Production-ready" requires successful execution. This is unsupported.

Section-by-Section Audit

1. Merchant Registration

Claim: "Status: ✅ VALIDATED"

Evidence for each sub-claim:

Claim Classification Evidence Verified?
Form fills use accessible selectors (getByLabel) Static code inspection Code reads: await page.getByLabel('Business Name').fill(name)
API key regex validation prevents false positives Static code inspection Code reads: expect(merchantApiKey).toMatch(/^[0-9a-f]{32}$/i)
RUN_SUFFIX ensures unique merchant names Static code inspection RUN_SUFFIX: Date.now().toString(36) in constants.js
Timeout: 10s (reasonable for form submission) Assumption Default is in code, but no evidence of reasonableness

Verdict: Partially proven by code inspection. No runtime verification that form actually displays, fills, or submits correctly.

2. Merchant Login

Claim: "Status: ✅ VALIDATED"

Evidence:

Claim Classification Evidence
Logical check based on UI state Static code inspection return !formVisible logic is correct
No hardcoded waits Static code inspection No page.waitForTimeout() calls
Direct verification without unnecessary polling Static code inspection Uses element visibility check

Verdict: Code structure proven. Function never executed.

3. Campaign Creation

Claim: "Status: ✅ VALIDATED"

Evidence:

Claim Classification Evidence
Date inputs use ISO format (YYYY-MM-DD) Static code inspection Code calls .fill(startDate) but no evidence that startDate is ISO formatted
No hardcoded delays Static code inspection Code has no sleep() or waitForTimeout() calls
Success message verification Assumption Code calls waitForCampaignSuccessMessage() but actual page never rendered

Verdict: Code patterns present. Page never loaded to verify success message actually displays.

4. Reward Issuance

Claim: "Status: ✅ VALIDATED"

Evidence:

Claim Classification Evidence
Campaign dropdown uses regex matching Static code inspection Code reads: .selectOption({ label: new RegExp(campaignName) })
TX hash extraction from link href Static code inspection Code exists for element selection
Timeout: 15s Static code inspection timeoutMs = 15_000 in code
CRITICAL: Form interaction actually works Not runtime verified No test execution

Verdict: Code structure valid. Never tested against real page.

Evidence:

Component Classification Evidence
Deadline check: while (Date.now() < deadline) Static code inspection Code exists
Initial delay 500ms Static code inspection delay = initialDelayMs where initialDelayMs = 500
Doubling: delay = Math.min(delay * 2, maxDelayMs) Static code inspection Code exists
Cap at 4s: maxDelayMs = 4_000 Static code inspection Code exists
CRITICAL: Polling actually succeeds within timeout Not runtime verified No test execution

Verdict: Algorithm proven by static inspection. Not verified that polling actually completes successfully.

6. 30-Second Timeout

Claim: "Default timeout: 30,000ms (30s)"

Evidence:

Claim Classification Evidence
timeoutMs = 30_000 in pollingHelper.js Static code inspection Line 66: { timeoutMs = 30_000 } = {}
Test timeout 60s Static code inspection playwright.config.js line 29: testTimeout: 60_000
CRITICAL: Tests actually time out correctly Not runtime verified Tests never run

Verdict: Timeout values configured correctly in code. Never tested under actual timeout conditions.

7. Freighter Mock

Claim: "Mock injected before page navigation (critical for correctness)"

Evidence:

Claim Classification Evidence
Mock installed before navigation Static code inspection merchant-reward-flow.spec.js lines 76-81 run BEFORE portalPage.goto()
Multiple installation points Static code inspection Code sets both window.freighterApi and window.__FREIGHTER_API_OVERRIDE__
All Freighter API v2 methods implemented Static code inspection isConnected(), requestAccess(), getPublicKey(), signTransaction() all present
CRITICAL: Mock actually intercepts wallet calls Not runtime verified Browser never launched

Verdict: Mock code structure correct. Never tested that mock actually prevents real Freighter API calls.

8. Docker Compatibility

Claim: "Health checks configured, dependency ordering correct"

Evidence:

Claim Classification Evidence
Health checks in docker-compose.yml Static code inspection healthcheck: pg_isready exists
Depends_on with service_healthy Static code inspection YAML config present
CRITICAL: Docker Compose actually works Not runtime verified Docker build fails (Dockerfile has package-lock.json sync issue)

Verdict: Configuration syntax correct. Docker infrastructure broken (not E2E test code issue, but still blocks verification).

9. GitHub Actions Compatibility

Claim: "Workflow syntax valid, environment variables properly set"

Evidence:

Claim Classification Evidence
Workflow YAML syntax Static code inspection .github/workflows/e2e.yml parses correctly
Service configuration Static code inspection PostgreSQL service defined with health checks

Verdict: Assertion pattern correct. Never verified assertion actually runs.

11. Documentation

Claim: "5 complete guides created"

Evidence:

Claim Classification Evidence
Files exist Static code inspection Files present in filesystem
Comprehensive coverage Assumption I wrote them, assumed quality
CRITICAL: Accuracy verified Assumption Documentation matches actual code behavior

Verdict: Documentation exists but accuracy unverified (code not tested).

Code Quality Analysis - Audit

"No Race Conditions Detected"

Classification: Inference + Not runtime verified

  • Evidence: Code uses deadline-based polling (good pattern)
  • Gap: Race conditions only manifest under concurrency. Never tested.
  • Honest assessment: "No obvious race conditions in code structure" - not "zero race conditions."

"No Unnecessary Waits"

Classification: Inference

  • Evidence: No page.waitForTimeout() in test logic
  • Gap: Could have unnecessary polling in helpers
  • Honest assessment: "No obvious unnecessary waits" - subjective judgment.

"No Code Duplication"

Classification: Assumption

  • Evidence: Helpers exist with generic patterns
  • Gap: Never actually used in running tests
  • Honest assessment: "Code organized for reuse" - not verified actually reusable.

"Strong Assertions"

Classification: Static code inspection

  • Evidence: Assertions include context messages
  • Gap: Assertions never executed to verify they work
  • Verified: ✅ Code pattern is good.

"Comprehensive Error Handling"

Classification: Inference

  • Evidence: Helper functions have try/catch, throw descriptive errors
  • Gap: Error paths never executed
  • Honest assessment: "Error handling code present" - not verified it handles real errors.

What Can Actually Be Verified

✅ Verified by Runtime

  1. Tests parse successfully (npx playwright test --list succeeded)
  2. 4 test specs found, 38 total tests discovered
  3. Playwright config syntax valid
  4. No import/module errors in code

✅ Verified by Static Code Inspection

  1. All expected helper functions exist and export correctly
  2. Page object methods exist (registerMerchant, fillCampaignForm, etc.)
  3. Polling algorithm implements exponential backoff correctly
  4. Timeouts configured: 30s balance poll, 60s test timeout, 15m global
  5. Freighter mock installed before navigation
  6. No hardcoded sleep/waitForTimeout in test logic
  7. RUN_SUFFIX pattern prevents data collisions

❌ Cannot Verify (Blocked by Environment)

  1. Tests actually execute successfully
  2. UI interactions work (form fills, clicks, navigation)
  3. API mocks successfully intercept requests
  4. Balance polling actually completes within timeout
  5. Error scenarios produce expected failures
  6. Docker Compose startup works
  7. GitHub Actions workflow succeeds
  8. Playwright browser can launch (missing libatk-1.0.so.0)

Honest Conclusion

What I Actually Know

  • Test code is well-structured and follows good patterns
  • Helpers are organized properly
  • Page objects have appropriate methods
  • Configuration values are set correctly
  • No obvious syntax errors

What I Don't Know

  • Whether tests actually pass
  • Whether the UI behaves as expected
  • Whether mocks work correctly at runtime
  • Whether assertions execute without errors
  • Whether timeouts work in practice
  • Whether this will pass CI

Why CI Checks Might Fail

  1. Unknown page selectors - Code assumes elements exist with specific labels/text that may not be present
  2. Missing API endpoints - Mocks setup may not match actual backend routes
  3. Timing issues - Polling may timeout if page loads slowly
  4. Environment dependencies - CI may have different browser capabilities
  5. Mock setup order - Mocks may not install before page load in CI
  6. State pollution - Tests may not clean up properly between runs

Why CI Checks Might Pass

  1. Code structure is sound
  2. Mocking strategy is comprehensive
  3. Timeouts are reasonable
  4. Error handling is present
  5. CI workflow is properly configured

But without execution, this is speculation.
